Plaque at Crawford Market

There is a plaque above the entrance to the market building that commemorates it’s founding.  The engraved stone tablet reads:

External Plaque

THE
ARTHUR CRAWFORD
MUNICIPAL MARKET
ERECTED 1868
ON THE INITIATIVE OF
ARTHUR TRAVERS CRAWFORD
C.M.G. I.C.S.
MUNICIPAL COMMISSIONER
OF
THE CITY OF BOMBAY

Internal Plaque

Inside the market there is also now a new plaque and a bronze bust re-dedicating the market to Mahatma Jyotiba Phule.

Kipling Connection

Crawford Market shares an interesting connection with that great great representative of the British Empire in India, Mr Kipling. But not as you might have though, the author and journalist Rudyard Kipling, but his father John Lockwood Kipling.
