General Post office of Mumbai

Not just somewhere you go to buy stamps, the General Post Office building in Mumbai is an attraction in it's own right.

Located close to the Victoria Terminus railway station and hence also to Crawford Market it is perfectly located to connect with mail trains which are the major way that postal services in India operate.

Completed originally in 1913 the building took over 10 years to complete and became the new GPO taking over from an older building next to Flora Fountain.

Today it is visited not only by locals to send and receiving post but also by philatelists from around the world who want to get something unique from India.

The Mumbai General Post Office is open from 9:00am in the morning until 8:00pm on weekdays, and from 10:00am until 5:30pm on weekends.

Certain services such as Identity cards and Insurance close earlier on weekdays at 4:30pm and are not available on weekends.

Kipling Connection

Crawford Market shares an interesting connection with that great great representative of the British Empire in India, Mr Kipling. But not as you might have though, the author and journalist Rudyard Kipling, but his father John Lockwood Kipling.
